d1 N[iv] - sketched portraiture [after-image]

The series of sketches are portraits of the the Xi Cang market characters. The notion of portrait is based on a phenomenally saturated understanding of icon/face articulated by Jean-luc Marion. What is the face of a character? The portraits are experiments of capturing an inverted order of visibility mediating between intention and intuition. They mediate between natural referents that constitutes an intentional gaze and that a mythical cloth/mask created by the suspension and hence envisage the gaze. Inspired by John Hejduk, I also consider these series as the [After-Image] of the characters in the embryonic space based on the residue of impressions after looking at the photos.
